The following is a true story...

Working all day in his father's cotton fields, Carl Perkins would play his homemade guitar during rest breaks. With cotton bale wire as strings and a wooden fruit box, young Carl played 'til the cows came home.

One night at a local school dance he overheard a boy complain to his dancing partner not to step on his blue suede shoes. Carl went home repeating the words in his head and in the morning, before starting off to work, he wrote the words on a potato sack with a piece of charcoal. He wrote the rest of the song that night while playing his fruit box guitar and started what we now call "rock and roll!"

Note: Carl passed away in January of this year, 1998.
