Yemeni Script Translator - this has replaced the standard "old Negev" characters with a photograph of the actual letters as they appear in the artifacts at Bilqis. It is suggested that you attempt words of two and sometimes three letters, as this is the common format. Also, remember you will be reading the characters from right to left. This is still in the beta version so report any bugs to garyvey@viewzone.com

Yemen and Sabean Culture & Language

**20** Semitic Languages.. Many scholars believe that about 1000 BC four branches developed from the original Semitic alphabet: South Semitic, Canaanite, Aramaic, and Greek. (Other scholars, however, believe that South Semitic developed independently from North Semitic or that both developed from a common ancestor.) The South Semitic branch was the ancestor of the alphabets of extinct languages used in the Arabian Peninsula and in the modern languages of Ethiopia. Canaanite was subdivided into Early Hebrew and Phoenician, and the extremely important Aramaic branch became the basis of Semitic and non-Semitic scripts throughout western Asia. The non-Semitic group was the basis of the alphabets of nearly all Indian scripts; the Semitic subbranch includes Square Hebrew, which superseded Early Hebrew to become the prototype of the recently constructed Hebrew writing. Semitic Languages comprise one of the five subfamilies or branches of the Hamito-Semitic or Afro-Asiatic language family. Of the Semitic languages, Arabic was carried beyond its original home in the Arabian Peninsula and spread throughout the Arabian Empire and is spoken across North Africa to the Atlantic coast. Arabic is used by Muslim, Christian, and Jewish Arabs. The other Semitic languages are centered in a region bounded on the west by Ethiopia and on the north by Syria and extending southeast through Iraq and the Arab Peninsula, with some “islands” of Semitic speech farther east in Iran.
